New Delhi: The central government will provide free coronavirus vaccines to states and union territories for inoculation of all above 18 from June 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday, announcing that the Centre will take over the 25 per cent state procurement quota. Asserting that vaccine supply would be increased significantly in the coming days, PM Modi said the Centre has now decided to buy 75 per cent of jabs from vaccine makers for free supply to states, while private sector hospitals will continue to procure 25 per cent of vaccines but they cannot charge more than Rs 150 per dose over the pre-fixed price.

With the second COVID-19 wave subsiding, several states and Union Territories have decided to ease the COVID-19 lockdown curbs, which were imposed in mid-April, in a phased manner. The Gujarat government eased the lockdown restrictions in the state and allowed offices to function with 100% staff from Monday (June 7, 2021).

18 people were killed in a fire at a chemical factory in Pune, police said. The police said 20 people had survived the blaze and the charred bodies of all those killed had been recovered. An inquiry has been ordered by the district administration.

At least 20 persons were killed in lightning strikes in three districts of south Bengal on Monday. Nine people died each in Murshidabad and Hooghly districts and two their lives in the Purba Medinipur district, the official said.
