New Delhi: Hours after Charanjit Singh Channi was sworn in as the new Punjab Chief Minister, Navjot Singh Sidhu expressed that a wonderful person has assumed the office today. The Punjab Congress Chief also stated that Channi has started working on matters of public interest.

"All issues including electricity bill waiver will be resolved," he added.

Sidhu also said that Rahul Gandhi has created history by making the first Dalit Sikh CM in Punjab. 

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Channi on being sworn in as Punjab CM. "Will continue to work with the Punjab government for the betterment of the people of Punjab," PM Modi said.

Charanjit Singh Channi took oath as the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab. The swearing-in ceremony took place at 11 am today in Chandigarh, a day after his name was announced by the Congress leadership for the top job in the state. Channi became the first individual from the Dalit community in the state to take charge. He took the oath in Punjabi.

Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Brahm Mohindra were also sworn in as the deputy chief ministers of Punjab today at the ceremony.

UP ADG Law and Order Prashant Kumar: Information was received that the President of Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, Mahant Narendra Giri died by suicide. The disciples told the police that around 3-4 pm, they broke the door which was locked from inside and found him hanging. Immediately police reached there, along with forensic and other teams. A suicide note was recovered in which he accused Anand Giri and two others for this step. Anand Giri has been arrested from Haridwar with the help of Uttarakhand Police and further probe is underway.

India: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has pulled out of several planned engagements in the United Kingdom citing the COVID-19 quarantine rules put in place by the British government. Taking to Twitter, Tharoor complained that "it is offensive to ask fully vaccinated Indians to quarantine."

New Delhi: Over 50 fresh cases of dengue have been reported in the national capital in the last one week, taking the total count this year to more than 210, according to a civic report released on Monday.
In this month alone, 87 cases have been recorded till September 18, which is about 41 per cent of the cumulative cases.

Mandaviya also visited the vaccination centre at AIIMS and held a review meeting with other AIIMS hospitals. He reviewed the research works going on in these hospitals to help provide better health care facilities.

Punjab:  Soon after taking the oath of office, the newly-sworn in Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said his government is standing with farmers and will appeal to the Centre to withdraw the three farm laws.

In his first interaction with media after taking the oath, Chief Minister said he is representative of poor sections of society including daily wage labourers and farmers. "I am not the representative of rich. I am representative of common man of Punjab," he said.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre on a plea of Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR), Delhi government, seeking additional safeguards for pregnant and lactating women like continuous monitoring of those receiving COVID-19 vaccination.

A Bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud also sought Solicitor General Tushar Mehta`s assistance on the policy which has been formulated and applicable guidelines that are to be framed. (ANI)

World: A student opened fire at a university in the Russian city of Perm on Monday, killing at least eight people and wounding several, law enforcement said. The gunman was himself killed after the shootings at Perm State University, around 1,300 km (800 miles) east of Moscow, Natalia Pechishcheva, a university spokesperson, said.

Maharashtra: Shiv Sena workers outside a Pune court on Sunday blackened the face of a man, who was earlier arrested for allegedly posting defamatory content on social media against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, party founder Balasaheb Thackeray and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar.

The accused identified as Abhijeet Limaye, 35, was arrested from his residence in Mumbai by Pune cyber police on Saturday. He was produced before the court, which granted him bail. As soon as he was released, some agitated Shiv Sena workers gathered outside the Pune court and blackened his face. (ANI)

Maharashtra: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya was detained at Karad Railway Station in Satara district of Maharashtra in the early hours of Monday. Somaiya was expected to visit Kohlapur today. He was en route to the district via train. Ahead of his visit, Kolhapur District Collector had issued prohibitory orders against him and imposed Section 144, prohibiting gatherings on September 20 and 21.

Meanwhile, BJP's Maharashtra unit president Chandrakant Patil slammed the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government over the alleged detention of party leader Kirit Somaiya in Mumbai. "Around 100 policemen are deployed outside residence of former MP Kirit Somaiya. Is Kirit Somaiya a terrorist? Terrorists who intend to organise blasts in Mumbai are arrested and some of them are roaming free as well. But when Kirit Somaiya is exposing scams related to corrupted ministers, he is being stopped," Patil said. (ANI)
