Assembly election, 23 Oct 2018: Mayawati to begin BSP's poll campaign from Rajasthan

The Congress on Monday fielded former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's niece Karuna Shukla from Rajnandgaon Assembly constituency in Chhattisgarh against Chief Minister Raman Singh.

The Congress on Monday fielded former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's niece Karuna Shukla from Rajnandgaon Assembly constituency in Chhattisgarh against Chief Minister Raman Singh. The party released its second list of 6 names for the first phase of Chhattisgarh assembly election after earlier naming candidates for 12 seats. The first phase of the assembly election will be held on November 12 and the last date for filing of nominations is October 23. The candidates for remaining 72 seats that will go to polls in the second phase are yet to be declared. The Congress has been out of power in Chhattisgarh for the last 15 years. Meanwhile, BJP has so far announced candidates for 78 seats including 18 going to the polls in the first phase.

BSP president Mayawati will begin the party's election campaign from October 25 in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. She will be holding 26 rallies in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The final plan for campaigning in Telangana is yet to get a final shape. She will begin the campaign from Rajasthan. She will address two rallies each every day on October 25, 26 and on November 2. She will hold 12 public meetings in Madhya Pradesh starting from November 2. She will be holding six rallies in Chhattisgarh. The first rally will be held on November 4, and public meetings will be held on 16 and 17 November.

An 11-member team of the Election Commission is in Telanagana for three days

An Election Commission team is on a three-day visit to Hyderabad to review poll preparedness in Telangana. The 11-member team, led by Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat, arrived on Monday and met representatives of nine recognised political parties. Two representatives from each party were given 19 minutes to voice their views. The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), opposition Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and other parties made their submissions before the team.

While the BJP has been attacking Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, ruling TRS MP B Vinod Kumar countered the criticism saying that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several of his ministerial colleagues have hailed his governance. "Not only BJP ministers, but ministers in Congress-ruled states had also praised the implementation of welfare and development schemes by the TRS government," he claimed.

Congress, its allies and the BJP intensified campaign for the December 7 Telangana assembly elections. The Congress has formed an alliance with parties, including TDP, CPI and Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS) for the elections. TDP supremo and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held meetings with the party's Telangana unit members in Hyderabad on Monday to take stock of the election preparations.
