Assembly election 2018: Samajwadi Party announces candidates for Chhattisgarh polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday released its first list of candidates for the Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram Assembly elections at the party's central election committee (CEC) meeting. The names were decided upon after hectic deliberations. The party announced names of 77 candidates for Chhattisgarh, 38 for Telangana and 13 for Mizoram. The party will be contesting Mizoram Assembly elections on 13 seats. Elections in Chhattisgarh are scheduled in two phases -- on November 12 and November 20, while the polling in Mizoram and Telangana will take place on November 28 and December 7, respectively. The counting of votes will take place on December 11.

To give an edge to the BJP in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, four spokespersons from the party's Uttar Pradesh unit have been dispatched to the neighbouring state for effective media management. Alok Awasthi, Tarunkant, Shalabh Mani Tripathi and Rakesh Tripathi have already left for Madhya Pradesh, a senior UP BJP leader said on Sunday adding that they were likely to remain there till the last day of campaigning. "Alok Awasthi will be doing media management in Shahdol division of MP. It covers Shahdol, Umaria, Anuppur districts," the leader said. Read more details here.

Samajwadi Party today announced names of three candidates for the first phase and six names for the second phase of the upcoming polls. In the 1st phase, Santosh Suman, Bimlesh Dubey and Chabindra Verma will contest on the party ticket from Bijapur, Jagdalpur and Dantewada respectively. In the second phase, Navin Gupta, Yogendra Bhoi, Jiban Singh Yadav, Mukesh Lahare, Amarnath Agarwal and Subendra Singh Yadav will contest from Raipur West, Basna, Akaltara, Pamgarh, Korba and Vaishali Nagar respectively. The Jhabua district administration in Madhya Pradesh had a unique idea to create voter awareness. They distributed stickers to liquor stores to be pasted on bottles to motivate people to exercise their franchise in the state elections. Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, former Maharashtra CM and Congress leader Ashok Chavan criticised the Shiv Sena for not being serious about the Ayodhya temple matter. He said that the name of the temple is being taken as the 2019 general elections are inching closer. "Uddhav Thackeray is giving new statements every other day. The Shiv Sena has never been serious on Ayodhya matter. Ayodhya name is being taken again and again because elections are approaching," he said over Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray's upcoming visit to Ayodhya.

The Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) announced that they will jointly campaign for the five by-elections in Karnataka on November 3. "As the BJP is our common rival, we have decided to have common candidates for all the five by-elections to avoid splitting votes, and jointly campaign to defeat the opposition contestants," said Congress leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. By-elections are being held in three Lok Sabha constituencies and two Assembly segments across the state to fill vacancies caused by the resignation of the sitting lawmakers in four seats and one due to death of a sitting Congress legislator.

Ajit Jogi, who has been projected as the chief ministerial candidate of the Janta Congress Chhattisgarh, BSP & CPI alliance will not be fighting polls. Jogi's son Amit said that since his father is the star campaigner and will visit 90 constituencies, it will be difficult for him to concentrate on his own. As per the seat-sharing formula, BSP will contest on 35 seats while Jogi’s party will contest on the remaining 55 seats in the 90-member assembly. BSP has already announced that it will be sharing two of its seats with CPIM.
