Wholesalers at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee in Vashi say the vegetable prices have not gone up much but roadside vendors are trying to make a fast buck by increasing the rates.

Vashi, July 11: Feeling the pinch of rise in vegetable prices? Blame your vegetable vendor.Wholesalers at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi say the vegetable prices have not gone up much but roadside vendors are trying to make a fast buck by increasing the rates.
"To justify the increase, the retailers cite poor monsoon and hike in fuel prices as the reasons," said a trader at APMC. Also, vendors fail to sell their stock the same day during monsoon and are forced to sell the same stock over two days, another trader at APMC said. "So, they do not come to the wholesale market to purchase fresh stock every day."

As a result, they can`t pass on the benefit of falling prices to buyers. APMC traders, however, say prices may go up in the next ten days as those parts of Maharashtra that produce vegetables have not received sufficient rainfall so far.
