TN to construct memorial to Islamic poet

Chennai, Nov 11: The Tamil Nadu government will construct a memorial to the Islamic Tamil poet Umaru Pulavar at his birth place in Ettayapuram in Tuticorin district, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said here today.
The 17th century poet became the poet laureate of the erstwhile Ettyapuram Kingdom at 16 and had authored `Sirapuranam`, the story of Prophet Mohammed`s life, in Tamil,

Jayalalithaa, in a statement, said the present memorial constructed in 1920 would be acquired by the government and a new memorial, in Islamic architecture, would be build at a cost of Rs 25 lakh.
