Temporary jobs are new lifeline for freshers: DNA

If one door closes, another opens, believes engineering graduate Sukesh Mehta.

Mumbai: If one door closes, another opens, believes engineering graduate Sukesh Mehta.

The 22-year-old, who completed his bachelor of engineering in June from an institute in the suburbs, was set to join a mid-sized IT company in Bangalore as a program analyst from this month. But the joining has been deferred by two months as the company is working on a strategy to improve margins.

Mehta fears the deferment will extend, as with his seniors last year, whose joining dates kept getting postponed because of the economic crisis, never to materialise. He has started exploring job options, and key among them is a temp job -- a temporary job wherein he will be on the payroll of a staffing firm, and not the company he will work for.

His acquaintances told him temping firms in Bangalore are looking for engineers who could work on coding and programming. Mehta appears gung-ho about approaching the temp firms and says the job, which will be on a project basis and will last for a few months, will provide him much-needed experience.

In a job market that has still not fully thrown open its doors, when job-seekers like Mehta are finding it difficult to survive, temping firms are providing succour.

According to Sudhakar Balakrishnan, CEO of the Bangalore-based temping company Adecco India, the organised temping market, comprising 350,000-400,000 temps, is seeing a surge.

"We are signing good deals. Companies, especially those from logistics, telecom, fast-moving consumer goods space, as those from IT, are going for temps," says Balakrishnan, adding that Adecco, which has 56,000 on its rolls, is adding about 1,500 on a monthly basis.

Anish Laikar of Bangalore`s Ikya Human Capital Solutions saysa 10% monthly growth is being seen in the temping market. "We are adding 1,000 people each month to our rolls," he adds.
