Itanagar, June 21: The per capita consumption of tea was showing declining trends as the production remained static at around 990 million kg a year in India, a senior Tea Board official said here on Sunday.
With the consumption of tea worldwide going down as the new generation got more addicted to `trendy` beverage joints, coupled with the expansion of fruit juice market, the Tea Board was exploring ways to popularise the brew by projecting the benefits and medicinal values, Executive Director of Tea Board, NE, Rakesh Saini told a press meet.

Saini, who earlier held the inaugural session of an awarness campaign for small tea growers of Arunachal Pradesh, pointed out the job prospects in tea cultivation in the state and region.

He said the board was giving more focus on improving the quality of tea rather than solely banking on rise in its production.

Turning to the tea sector in Arunachal, Saini said tea was fetching more prices than those produced in some traditional tea growing states like neighbouring Assam because of it`s value addition.
