Mumbai: There was high drama in the civic standing committee meeting on Wednesday when a discussion on the current water crisis began.
Corporators accused the civic administration of “selling out to the rich and letting the poor suffer”.
They asked the administration to send notices to all 5-star hotels, that use potable water in their pools, and bottled water plants saying their water supply would be cut till the crisis is resolved.
Corporator Yogesh Sagar said: “We have experienced 30 per cent water cuts across Mumbai but the BMC is still giving water for recreational purposes.”
The BMC has already cut supply to 45 pools, 114 parks and 683 construction sites.
Deputy municipal commissioner Pramod Charankar said, “The city usually gets 3,400 million litres of water per day (MLD) and right now we are getting around 2,900 MLD.”
“If these firms want to move court against our decision they can, but we don’t want the city to remain thirsty while water is given commercial use,” said Congress corporator Sameer Desai.
Finally, the administration relented and said it would issue notices to all bottling plants and five-star hotels in the city about stopping water supply.
