Review: ‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’ is a tacky romantic comedy!

Mumbai, April 24: If you are an ardent fan of Meg Ryan and simply loved her in flicks like ‘Kate and Leopald,’ ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘You’ve Got Mail,’ chances are that ‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’ will leave you disappointed.
‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’ is in no way comparable to those breezy romantic comedies for which Meg Ryan is known. ‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’ is a shoddy story about an obese bundle of nerves i.e. Martha (Meg Ryan) who, one fine day, decides to reinvent herself when her FBI agent son Henry (Colin Hanks) goes on a mission.

When Henry returns after three years, to his surprise, his mom has all of a sudden transformed into a hottie who is dating boys half his age! Well, Henry’s troubles do not end here as his fiancée, Emily (Selma Blair), too gets along fabulously with his mother.

With the arrival of Tommy (Antonio Banderas) comes the twist in the story. Antonio enters the life of Martha and is completely smitten by her as both get attracted towards each other.

However, Henry learns about Tommy’s real identity of that being an international art conman who is all set to steal a pricey sculpture - Mother and Son.

Henry decides to spy on his mother and from here onwards; ‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’ becomes slapstick romantic comedy that is in great need of a good plot.

For Meg Ryan lovers, ‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’ will be a great disappointment. Despite her great efforts, one can hardly connect with Meg’s role. With a shoddy character sketch, ‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’ is a badly made flick. Martha’s relations with both Henry and Emily is embryonic, infact, Emily just ends up being a prop in the movie. In case of Tommy, he hardly captures your imagination. The Italian chef played by Enrico Colantoni is the only saving grace in the film that leaves you in splits with his serenading act with Martha.

‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’ gets pathetically funny when poor Henry is coming to terms with his mom’s newfound sex drive. In all, ‘My Mom’s New Boyfriend’ is a forgettable comedy.

Ratings: Two cheers for this one!
