Mumbai, Feb 06: Writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, perhaps, would never have thought that his legendary character Devdas– a weepy, self-destructive hero could be recreated as a 21st century brash, arrogant, ill-mannered, demanding, lusty, champion loser - ‘Dev D’.
Director Anurag Kashyap, in this exceptional film, has managed to evoke the pathos and tragedy of Devdas in contemporary style. Cinematography, back score, treatment and the look of the film are strikingly original.

We have seen so many film adaptations of ‘Devdas’ as the story transcends age and time. But Kashyap’s take is different– his ‘Dev D’ (Abhay Deol) is the modern everyman – you will see him brooding in a college, sulking in a bar, weeping at an office. His ‘Paro’ (Mahi Gill) is very real. She`s beautiful, impulsive and arrogant. The third angle in the love triangle- Chanda’s (Kalki Koechlin) character is inspired from the MMS scandal girl from a Delhi school. Life’s cruelties make her a call-girl but she continues her education.

Weaving a modern tale out of a timeless story, Kashyap presents ‘Devdas’ in a brand new ‘Dev D’ avatar– one can easily identify with the protagonist.

Like in other adaptations, in this film also, Dev (Abhay Deol) and Paro are madly in love with each other but this time love involves lust as well. But due to some misunderstanding (no class or caste bar), Paro gets married to another man.

Ruined by love, Dev finds solace in alcohol and drugs. After a lot many pills and alcohol, Dev D lands up at young Lenny`s aka Chanda’s place. She is a call girl by profession and a student by will. What begins is the ‘emosional’ upheaval in the lives of the three characters.

The script work is excellent and so are the genre, music and editing aspects. Brilliant dialogues back the movie and the film is dotted with memorable moments.

Adhay Deol gets full marks for his excellent histrionics– the actor is fast making a mark in hatke films. Mahi Gill is brilliant too and so are the other actors. Amit Tripathi’s music is of course making waves since ‘Emosional Atyachar’ of the Patna Ke Presley fame was released.

In a way, Dev D is India`s first recent film that has the potential to appeal to the new audience which is not averse from listening to old story, albeit with a snazzy twist. Four cheers!
