Police facing problem in entering some courts: TN DGP

Though normal functioning has resumed in the judiciary post-Feb 19 violence in Madras High Court complex, police faced problems in entering courts in some places, Tamil Nadu DGP K P Jain on Saturday said.

Madurai, March 28: Though normal functioning has
resumed in the judiciary post-Feb 19 violence in Madras High Court complex, police faced problems in entering courts in some places as they were "not being allowed by judges", Tamil Nadu DGP K P Jain on Saturday said.
"Entry of police into the court is a matter which now
rests with court," he told reporters here replying to a query
on the issue.

Police personnel had been barred from entering the
district court and Madras High Court bench premises here ever
since the police-lawyers clash in Chennai last month, leading
to piquant situations with no policemen available to take into
custody the accused who surrender in courts.

In Chennai too, the situation is same. Last week, Saravana
Bhavan chain of hotels owner P Rajagopal, sentenced to life in
a murder case, had to wait for over three hours in a sessions
court in the Madras High Court complex after he surrendered.
He was finally escorted to an adjacent police station by the
government lawyers.

In the aftermath of the police-lawyers clash, the high
court registrar had stated that the then Acting Chief Justice
or the registrar general have given no permission to the
police to enter the high court premises.
