Bangalore, Feb 06: A four-stage performance appraisal system for college teachers - by students, peer group, the Principal and the respective teachers themselves - will be in place by the coming academic year.

In a move to supplement professional development of the teaching faculty and identify their training needs, the Department of Collegiate Education has mooted the new system, which will be tried out first in a few select colleges and later, after smoothening out the rough edges, will be introduced in all Government and aided colleges across the State.

Hitherto, the feed back on the performance of teachers was based on the assessment by the college principal alone. Under the new system, the student will play a major role in assessing the calibre and quality of education imparted by the teacher. The other stakeholders include a peer group of three colleagues and also self appraisal.
