NBW against BSP Minister Swami Prasad Maurya

A local court Thursday issued a non-bailable warrant against the party`s state President and Cabinet Minister Swami Prasad Maurya in connection with a 22-year-old attempt to murder case.

Rae Bareli, Jan 22: In yet another setback to the ruling BSP in Uttar Pradesh, a local court today issued a non-bailable warrant against the party`s state President and Cabinet Minister Swami Prasad Maurya in connection with a 22-year-old attempt to murder case.
Issuing the NBW against the leader, Judicial Magistrate (I) Deepa Rai, also rejected an application moved by him through the district administration seeking dismissal of the
case.

Turning down the Minister`s request, the court observed that the case was of serious nature and hence cannot be dismissed.

The case was lodged against Maurya in 1987, when he was in the Lok Dal.

During a protest against paucity of water for irrigation in the district, a mob led by Maurya allegedly clashed with the police injuring several personnel following which a case of attempt to murder, vandalism, breach of peace and other sections of the IPC was lodged against him and his supporters.

During trial, a non-bailable warrant was issued against him in 1990, after he failed to appear before the court despite repeated summons.

At that time, Maurya obtained a bail from the court.

On December 8 last year, the leader moved an application in the court through the district administration, requesting to dismiss the case, which was taken up for hearing today.

The BSP is already embroiled in a controversy following the killing of a PWD engineer in Auraiya allegedly by one of its MLAs and his associates.
