Munger, Jan 05: Naxalites of Cpi(Maoist) today set
off a landmine killing Police Superintendent K C Surendra Babu and six other policemen when they were returning from an operation against the outlawed ultra-leftists, officials said.

District Magistrate R S B Singh said the Naxalites
detonated the landmine planted by them through a remote
control when the gypsy carrying Surendra Babu reached near
Gangta (Bhimbandh).

The police vehicle jumped 50 feet high and was blown into
pieces. Surendra Babu, a 1997-batch IPS, his bodyguard, driver
and four other district armed police personnel were killed on
the spot.

Director General of Police Narayan Mishra however said
six policemen were killed in the ambush.

Surendra Babu long with his Jamui counterpart O N Bhaskar
had gone to Gangta to supervise joint operation by the
Munger and Jamui police in connection with yesterday`s loot of
four rifles and one carbine by the Naxalites from the Kajra
railway station. The blast took place while he was returning
to the district headquarters here, Singh said.

The firearms of the slain policemen were also looted
by the Naxalites.

Mishra said though no Naxal outfit has so far claimed
responsibility for the blast, it was suspected to be the
handiwork of Maoist Communist Centre (MCC). The new outfit--
the CPI (Maoist)--recently came into being after the merger of
MCC and the People`s War Group in Andhra Pradesh.

One company each of CRPF and BSF were sent to Munger from
Patna to assist the policemen in combing operation, the DGP
said.
