Militants strike in Srinagar after three-month lull

In the first major strike in the Kashmir Valley since the Amarnath land agitation in June, militants carried out a grenade attack here today, injuring 15 persons including two security personnel.

Srinagar, Sept 17: In the first major strike in
the Kashmir Valley since the Amarnath land agitation in June,
militants carried out a grenade attack here today, injuring 15
persons including two security personnel.

The militants hurled a grenade targeting a security
picket at the entrance of the Akhara building in the business
hub of Budshah chowk but it missed the intended target,
official sources said.

The grenade hit a passenger bus before exploding on
the roadside, injuring 15 persons including two securitymen.

The windscreens of the vehicle were smashed under the
impact of the blast, they said adding some of the injured were
travelling in the bus.

Police assisted by CRPF immediately cordoned off the
area and launched a search operation to nab the militants, the
sources said.

However, no one was arrested during the operation.
The militants are believed to have fled after the
blast which triggered panic in the area, the sources said.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the
grenade attack, the first major attack in the last three
months in the Valley which witnessed protests and shutdowns
called by separatists following the Amarnath land row.
