New Delhi, June 05: Frequent transfers of IPS officers in states may become a thing of the past with the Centre proposing fixed two-year tenures for them.
"The Union Home Ministry is in the process of consulting states regarding fixed tenures of various posts of IPS officers in state cadres," sources in the Ministry said today.
They said the Government favoured a two-year tenure for them in tune with the recommendations of the Police Reforms Committee.
Letters have been sent to the states in this regard, they said.
The Committee, headed by Soli Sorabjee, has recommended fixed tuenure of two years for senior police officers to avoid arbitrary transfers.
The MHA's move comes close on the heels of the Centre planning to come out with a policy soon on fixing the tenure of S officers in states for two years. The step is seen as an effort to revamp the public Administration System.
The proposal for having fixed tenures for both IAS and IPS officers has faced strong objections from some states.
The fixed tenure would not, however, be applicable to officers who are to retire, go on promotion, training or leave.
