‘Internet domain name registration grows 12% in Q1’

The registration of domain names on net has witnessed a 12% growth during the first quarter of 2009 taking the total to 180 million globally, a report says.

New Delhi, June 05: The registration of domain names
on the internet has witnessed a 12 per cent growth during the
first quarter of 2009 taking the total to 180 million
globally, a report says.

According to US-based internet infrastructure services
provider VeriSign`s first quarter 2009 Domain Name Industry
Brief, the internet now encompasses more than 180 million
domain names, of which India accounts for 1.4 million such
names.

The total (180 million) represents a three per cent rise
over the fourth quarter of 2008 (Q-o-Q) and a 12 per cent jump
over the same quarter a year earlier (Y-o-Y), VeriSign said in
a statement.

"Total base of domain names in India was 1.4 million as
of March 31, with about 8 lakh `.com` & `.net` domain names,"
the statement said.

A domain name is a label of identification to define a
realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the
internet.

During the quarter, an average of 2.4 million new `.com`
and `.net` registrations were added each month, VeriSign said.

At the same period, the overall base of `.com` and `.net`
domain names grew to 92.4 million.
