Bangalore, Feb 02: Bollywood stalwart Aamir Khan was awarded the ‘Indian of the Year’ award in a glitzy and emotive ceremony by a TV channel on Monday evening. Though absent from the ceremony personally, he made a deep and lasting impression of his charming thanks and humble acceptance of the award. His mother Zeenat Khan accepted the award on Aamir’s behalf.
Speaking for his mother, Aamir said, “She doesn’t get to see me receive many awards.” To this, when the host quipped in with the question ‘Why don’t you come to receive awards?’, Aamir sent people guffawing by saying, “It is not that I don’t receive awards. I don’t get any!”

Aamir’s proud mother Zeenat said to her son, “This is a very fortunate moment. Congratulations on your honour. May the All mighty bring days like this always in your life. Amen”

The moment turned anticipatory with Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss coming in the picture. Ramadoss, being a strong supporter of banning onscreen smoking along with the fact of Aamir having essayed many such smoky scenes, promised some fireworks.

But Ramadoss isn’t a politician for nothing. He said, “I congratulate you on this wonderful award. Coming back to smoking onscreen, it is my responsibility as the health minister to create awareness among the Indian citizen.” He went on to clarify, “I am not against anybody. In fact I have become a big fan of Aamir after watching ‘Taare Zameen Par’. His work is an eye-opener, and he has done a very good work.”

When asked about any possibility of Aamir joining politics in future, he denied with certainty. However, he did have a message for the politicians. He said, “I appreciate the efforts of our Health Minister for the welfare of the country. However, disallowing smoking scenes is not the correct stance. As film stars we create a semblance of reality onscreen. Films are a public medium to portray life – it has both good and bad aspects. But bad things are shown in movies, and smoking is one of them.”
