Mumbai, Aug 09: He was first noticed in ‘Rang De Basanti’ – a tall lean figure with killer looks and exceptional histrionic skills. And soon, he went on to develop an enviable female fan following. The lady’s man is none other than Kunal Kapoor, who in an exclusive chat with Spicezee’s Swati Chaturvedi in ‘Kahiye Janaab’, talks about his sex appeal, relationships, ideal woman, movies and much more…
Swati: What is the secret of your sex appeal, your good looks, your dark glasses? Like other actors, are you developing six-pack abs?

Kunal: (Naughtily) Your beauty is blinding so I am wearing dark glasses. Well, I don’t have six-pack abs. The only six-pack I have is – six-pack of beer. Am trying for 12 packs and it would be more interesting to have 24 packs!

Swati: Which school do you belong to: Serious school of acting or six-packs school of acting?

Kunal: I am not from serious school if it means sitting alone in a corner. If serious school of acting means having a thorough preparation of what I am doing then, yes, I belong to the serious school of acting. But I am also of six-packs school of acting, as I am developing six-packs.

Swati: Will you unveil your six-packs like SRK did, just before ‘Om Shanti Om’?

Kunal: (Mischieviously) Perhaps in 5-6 years I will unveil it with great pomp and show.

Swati: You got super success in ‘Rang De Basanti’, but after that you have given flops and then, you started endorsing products. What impact did your flop films have on you?

Kunal: Movie-making is a process. I think you should be prepared for hits as well as flops. Only 5% of films in Bollywood do well. My flop films may have not done well but am happy to be associated with those films. Inspite of my flops, I am flooded with good offers because the films I did were essentially good. All the Bollywood biggies have gone through a bad phase, it doesn’t matter.

Swati: ‘Laga Chunari Mein Daag’ was a big flop. How was it working for Yash Raj camp?

Kunal: I have not come across any such ‘camps’. I am of my own camp. My only camp is my home. But I was honoured to be associated with the prestigious Yash Raj Films.

Swati: It is strange that Hindi film actors do not speak in Hindi in interviews and functions. And they proudly say that they cannot speak Hindi. What’s your take on this?

Kunal: (Switches to Hindi) Well, I speak in Hindi at home and with friends. I guess, our education system is English medium. Guess, that’s the reason!

Swati: Normally actors are thought to be born with a silver spoon but you are a writer – a cerebral-thinking-actor – isn’t this a rare case?

Kunal: As against the prevalent belief, film line is an intelligent profession. You have to use your mind to get things done. I am not intelligent. (Smiles) It’s only that I don’t shave and smile, perhaps that makes people think that I am a pseudo-intellectual.

Swati: On internet, you are the most ‘linked’ man. If the stories are to be believed, you are a serial- dating Casanova, always in and out of relationship.

Kunal: Media gives me more credit than I deserve. They believe I have more testosterone than I actually have. Yes, I am in touch with my feminine side but am not into a relationship.

Swati: After the success of RDB, you are said to have developed a ‘rockstar’ persona. How do you feel about this ‘serial-dater’ tag attached to you and when you are linked with co-stars?

Kunal: I have been a rockstar since childhood, RDB did not change me. As for the link-ups, it’s fine if you are friends with the person concerned, then you can laugh it off but if you are just acquaintances then, the situation becomes awkward.

Swati: Recently, what are the latest ‘link-ups’?

Kunal: (Hesitates) Well, there were stories about Sonam Kapoor and me. We are just acquaintances. There was a newspaper story linking us up, then the story was picked up by entertainment portals and the distorted story was all over the internet. It becomes very awkward sometimes.

Swati: Please tell us about your relationship status?

Kunal: (Laughs) At present, I am in a relationship with Kunal Kapoor – myself! For a serious relationship, you need time. It takes time to grow. I’ve had my share of relationships but at present there is no one particular in my life.

Swati: What are the attributes you would like to see in your dream girl?

Kunal: (Laughs) Not many. She should just be intelligent, beautiful, rich, who would give me space, well-educated… . Kidding, I would like her to be simple. ‘Simplicity’ is the word. Well, there is a phrase – ‘I love her because she smiles at me and means it’ – I would like her to be real and honest. There is too much of drama in the film world, I would like to woo someone simple and genuine.

Swati: You have worked in the stock market, construction, you have changed professions frequently…then, you joined films. What made you go for a change everytime?

Kunal: Initially, I wanted lot of money. I wanted to be rich and people said there is money in construction business, so I went for it. But it was boring, stock markets also did not excite me. Then I took to films and I found that this was something I wanted to do sans the money factor. My earlier professions led me to this discovery. My family has been supportive throughout. When I was working as an assistant director for ‘Aks’, Manoj Bajpai asked me to meet Barry John. I went to John, and he asked me to stay for 4 months. My family bore with my infrequent behaviour and has been supportive throughout.

Swati: In terms of creativity, are you satisfied?

Kunal: At present, I am happy about a film called ‘Lamha’ – being directed by Rahul Dholakia, who has directed ‘Parzania’. I am happy with the amazing script and with the fact that I will work with Sanjay Dutt in the film.

Swati: Tell us something about your writings and works?

Kunal: I started writing just to express myself. Everyday I used to write something..which I call poetry but I don’t know others will agree or not. My poetry has not been inspired by anything in particular. My works are very personal, I don’t share it with anyone.
