Bangalore, Jan 05: India's home grown advanced light helicopters Dhruv has been deployed by the Indian Army and the coast guard in relief operations in tsunami-affected coastal regions.

coast guard in relief operations in tsunami-affected coastal
regions.

"These helicopters are being extensively deployed by
Indian Army and Coast Guard in Nagapattinam, Kumbakonam and
Chennai for tsunami relief operations," Hindustan Aeronautics
Ltd, which designed, developed and built the Dhruv
helicopters, said in a statement here today.

The multi-role Dhruvs are used to move medical teams,
drop medicines and food besides undertaking extensive aerial
survey over the affected areas.

Dhruv is a 5.5 tonne class, 13 seater helicopter powered
by two engines, built for multiple roles including
heli-ambulance, civilian transport and military operations,
officials said.
