HC stays criminal proceedings against Sunil Gangopadhyay

Kolkata, Dec 07: The Calcutta High Court today stayed criminal proceedings against well-known Bengali novelist Sunil Gangopadhyay and others before a city court in a case alleging that the author had made derogatory comments against religious feelings of a particular community.

Taking up an application for quashing of proceedings by
Gangopadhyay and the others, Justice S P Talukdar stayed
hearing in the matter before Additional Chief Judicial
Magistrate for eight weeks.

Hearing in the application seeking quashing of criminal
proceedings in the case filed by B B Nandi, a retired IPS
officer, would be taken up by Justice Talukdar after six
weeks.

Nandi had lodged a case before the ACJM, Alipore Court,
alleging that the author had in one of his articles published
in a Bengali daily had hurt the religious feelings of a
community.

On the basis of the complaint, the trial court had
issued summons against Gangopadhyay and others.
