New Delhi, Oct 08: As South Asia remembered the
victims of last year's devastating earthquake, government is
taking concrete steps towards better detection of seismic
movements with an aim to reduce the extent of tragedies.
Government has decided to set up an institute with the
help of Iceland which is considered to possess advanced
technologies in the field.
The institute will set up a series of earthquake
precursors which will closely monitor seismic movements to
predict earthquake accurately.
"The idea is to have a system to measure slightest
movement of the tectonic plate and analyse the data to get an
indication of an impending earthquake," Union Minister for
Earth Sciences Kapil Sibal told mediapersons.
The institute, to be set up by Ministry of Earth Sciences
in collaboration with Iceland, will study tectonic movements
in sensitive zones and Instal six pressure recorders or
earthquake precursors in the sea-bed to warn of approaching
Tsunamis.
"We plan to complete the project by September 2007,"
Sibal said, adding the new set up would enable seismologists
to predict quakes.
An analysis of the data received from the precursors
would make it possible to arrive at a pattern of tectonic
forces that lead to quakes.
The ministry swung into action after the devastating
earthquake that struck parts of Jammu and Kashmir and
Pak-occupied Kashmir in which over 80,000 people were killed
and 3.5 million rendered homeless.
