Govt eyeing to add Nalanda site in World Heritage List

The site of the historic Nalanda university has been included in the tentative list of UNESCO`s World Heritage Centre (WHC) last month, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

Nalanda university has been included in the tentative list of
UNESCO`s World Heritage Centre (WHC) last month, the Lok Sabha
was informed on Wednesday.

"Our proposal to include Nalanda site in the tentative
list of WHC was accepted by the World Heritage Committee last
month in its 33rd session at Sevella, Spain," said Minister of
State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs V Narayanasamy.

As per guidelines, he said, it is mandatory to include
a site having outstanding universal value in the tentative
list of WHC for one year before it is considered for
inscription in World Heritage List of WHC.

In a written reply, he also said India has submitted
nomination dossiers of Jantar Mantar in Jaipur (Rajasthan) and
Matheran light rail in Raigad (Maharashtra) and clusters of
Western Ghats for consideration of their inscription in the
World Heritage List of UNESCO.

Nomination of Jantar Mantar and Matheran light rail
would come up for consideration of WHC in its 34th session in
Brazil next year, the Minister said.

The nomination dossiers of Jantar Mantar and Matheran
light rail have been sent under the cultural category and the
clusters of Western Ghats under natural category, he said.
