Ford envinces interest in setting up international tourism centre

Kolkata, Feb 22: The Ford group is planning to set up an international tourism centre at Mayapur, the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in West Bengal.
The great grandson of legendary Henry Ford and Ford group chief Alfred Ford met Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta and senior officials in this regard earlier this week.

“We had a positive discussion and the finance minister gave me a patient hearing,`` Ford said after the meeting.

Dr Dasgupta said the project would also take care of public health, local cottage and small scale industries, education and employment in and around Mayapur.

``We will continue our discussions for setting up the project,`` Dr Dasgupta said.

He, however, refused to divulge the total amount of investment saying, ``We are working on it.``

It is reliably learnt that Ford had expressed his desire to invest over Rs 600 crore on a 400 acres of land for this centre.

The state government had, however, expressed its inability to allot 400 acres of land to Ford for this project.

However, the state government made it clear that Ford can acquire land at Mayapur in accordance with the state law.
