Kathmandu, Jan 16: The Everest base camp, blessed with the beauty of snow-capped peaks and glaciers, has entered the list of top tourist destinations in the world.
Situated at an altitude of 5,400 metres above the sea level, the camp attracts some 20,000 to 30,000 tourists, many of whom aspire to scale the world's highest peak, every year.

A study conducted by a UK magazine has rated the camp as the seventh best destination in the world, the Nepal Tourism Board said in a release here today.

A visit to the place has also been listed among the 20 best "journeys of a lifetime.'

It is the only South Asian destination that has been included in the list.

Those who plan to scale the 8848 metre Everest usually spend two to three months at the base camp to acclimatize themselves before embarking on their expedition.

"When you reach there you feel like in the island of snow as you see glaciers, ice-bergs and avalanche everywhere," Ang Phurba Sherpa, an Everest summiteer said.
