Delhi exploring sanitation options for rural areas

The national capital's rural areas lacking proper drainage system and drinking water facilities will now get some respite with the government exploring the installation of special sewage disposal facilities in villages.

New Delhi, Oct 08: The national capital's rural areas lacking proper drainage system and drinking water facilities will now get some respite with the government exploring the installation of special sewage disposal facilities in villages.
"Due to a severe shortage of water in rural areas, we cannot have the sewage disposal facilities prevalent in urban areas. So we are exploring the setting up of alternative
systems like oxidation plants and soak-pit chambers," Delhi Jal Board CEO Arun Mathur told a news agency.

The untreated sewage is also affecting the drinking water in rural areas as most of them are dependent on underground supply from tubewells, he said. Recently, there were reports of water bodies like ponds being polluted by the untreated sewage.

"Thus we are looking for better sewage disposal facilities for these rural areas," Mathur said, adding the DJB has appointed consultants to advise it on the kind of systems
that would be suitable for rural areas.

"The consultants will identify a group of villages and advise us on the kind of system which can be installed there. We are exploring a number of options like oxidation plants,
mini-sewerage treatment plants and 'soak-pit' system for different clusters of villages."
