New York, April 16: US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton held a meeting with Nobel Laureate and pioneer in
microcredit Muhammad Yunus, during which the two discussed his
plans to transform Bangladesh`s health care system.
Clinton met the head of Bangladesh`s Grameen Bank for 30
minutes ahead of a global forum on `development in the midst
of economic downturn` here.
"They discussed his plans to transform Bangladesh health
care through the development of Health Management Centers,"
said a spokesperson of the Bureau of South and Central Asian
Affairs.
"These projects would focus on women`s and pediatric
health care and will be associated with Grameen`s banks," the
spokesperson said.
Clinton has been a long time advocate of microcredit and
expanding the availability of health care.
Clinton and Yunus have known each other and have worked
together for over 20 years now.
Leaders from key sectors will share strategies for
addressing some of the world`s most pressing challenges,
including poverty, access to education and global health at
the forum tomorrow.
