Bad cop gets good backing: The Times of India

The police in UP do not seem to care about chief minister Mayawati`s directives.

Lucknow, July 04:: The police in UP do not seem to care about chief minister Mayawati`s directives. Or else how can one explain that despite clear instructions of the CM to
provide justice to weaker sections, particularly women, the police department is trying to protect Subhash Sharma, sub-inspector (SI) in Alambagh police station, accused of assaulting a woman and molesting her two minor daughters.

Under media pressure, the SI was put under suspension after a probe conducted by additional superintendent of police (ASP) Harish Kumar found Sharma prima facie guilty. But Sharma`s name is missing from the FIR lodged in the case. The FIR, in fact, is against "unidentified persons", contrary to the inquiry report, which states that the woman was assaulted by the SI. More shocking is the fact that it does not mention even a single word about molestation of the two minor girls.

A victim of domestic violence, Rohini had gone to police for protection and lodge an FIR against her husband. But Sharma, who is reportedly a friend of Rohini`s husband, made her do rounds of the police station for a month but did not register the FIR. The woman then with the help of social activist Prof RR Verma approached Inspector General (IG) of police (law and order), AP Maheshwari, on whose intervention Sharma was force to register the FIR on Monday evening.

However, later in a bid to teach the woman a lesson for daring to approach senior officers, the SI along with a constable allegedly barged into Rohini`s house late on Monday night. The two policemen brutally assaulted the woman, resulting in a fracture in her right ankle, and molested her two minor daughters. On Tuesday, when media persons informed senior police officers about the incident, an inquiry was conducted by the ASP and subsequently the SI was put under suspension.

However, a day after, on Wednesday, it was revealed that suspension was only an eyewash. Inspector, Alambagh police station, Rajveer Singh, when contacted, confirmed that the FIR is against unidentified persons. He further said that the case has been registered under sections 323/504/452 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), which are related to assault and threat. The FIR neither mentions the name of the SI or police constable, nor does it talk about the molestation of the two minor girls.

Significantly, Rajveer claimed that in her written complaint Rohini had not mentioned about molestation. However, Rohini said that she has not given any written statement. "I answered the queries of the inquiry officer and told him everything from assault to molestation. He recorded the entire thing in his diary. I don`t know what he wrote but believe me I told the ASP every bit with all the details as I have done before the mediapersons and others," Rohini told TOI.
