Australia wins `Beer World Cup`

Australia may have been ousted in the second round of football World Cup, but an ale from the land of Socceroos has won a ``World Cup of Beer`` in Britain.

Melbourne, July 09: Australia may have been ousted in the second round of football World Cup, but an ale from the land of Socceroos has won a `World Cup of Beer` in Britain.
The competition, organised by British Industry Magazine `off licence news,` pitted beers from 32 countries that contested soccer World Cup against each other, Australian newspaper `daily telegraph` reported.

Where a representative beer could not be found, another representative drink from the country was used.

The drinks were placed in eight groups of four, to correspond with the World Cup, with the two top scoring beverages moving to the second round and knock out tastings. The judges awarded marks for taste, appearance, balance and
drinkability.

A beer produced by South Australian brewer Coopers was named the eventual winner after it defeated Italy’s Peroni Nastro Azzurro 4-3 in the final taste-off, the report said.

And perhaps keeping in mind that it was Italy, which knocked out the Socceroos in the soccer World Cup, Coopers chairman Glenn Cooper said he took comfort in the knowledge that Australia had won "the more important World Cup".
