Depression is a common mental disorder, causing persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It is also a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease, affecting more people than any other mental disorder.
A number of lifestyle factors can contribute to depression. But making some healthier choices like eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, getting enough sleep, taking time out for relaxation, etc., can help reduce/prevent depression.
While there's no specific food proven to relieve depression, diet plays a huge role in dealing with it. But, you should avoid eating junk food when you're depressed as it can actually worsen your symptoms. This is because most of these foods contain large amounts of saturated fats, refined sugars, processed ingredients, caffeine, etc.

Lack of selenium may be one of many factors that contribute to a depressed mood. Research has suggested that taking selenium, which is an element that is essential for good health, may decrease feelings of depression. Selenium can be found in nuts, whole grains, beans, seafood and lean meats.
