New Delhi: In a rare case, a 63-year-old woman from Tasmania gave birth to a healthy baby girl to become the oldest first-time mother in Australia.
As per reports, the woman, whose identity has not been revealed and got pregnant with the help of IVF, delivered the baby at 34 weeks through a caesarean section in Frances Perry House private hospital in Melbourne on Monday, August 1.
After years of failed IVF procedures, the new mother conceived using an embryo sourced from an overseas donor, reports the BBC.
The woman, whose husband is 78, and her daughter are recovering at the hospital.
Meanwhile, news of the birth has sparked controversy with experts claiming of IVF treatment of women older than 53 is 'irresponsible'.
“Our bodies weren't designed to have children in our 60s. I don't think any responsible IVF unit in Australia would treat someone of that age, and it's not a standard of medicine I would condone,” Monash University professor Gab Kovacs was quoted as saying.
The new mother broke the previous Australian record, who gave birth to her first child at 60 in 2010.
Currently, the wold record for being the oldest mother is held by Romanian woman named Adriana Iliescue. She gave birth to a baby girl in 2005 aged 66.
