Chandigarh: The Centre has approved Haryana government's proposal to change renaming of Ganda and Kinnar villages in Fatehabad and Hisar districts.

The move comes after local residents of the two villages had urged the state government to change the names of both villages, as they felt "embarrassed" with such names.

Ganda has been renamed as Ajit Nagar, and Kinnar will now be called as Gaibi Nagar.

A girl named Harpreet Kaur Malkat, had written a letter to Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi appealing to change of name of her village.

The 14-year-old girl had apprised the PM as to how residents felt ashamed and embarrassed every time they needed to utter the village's name.

While Kinnar means eunuch in English, Ganda means dirty in English.
