JUNAGARH: A priest of the Swaminarayan temple was on Thursday attacked in poll-bound Gujarat. Two unidentified men are believed to be behind the attack which took place just a day before voting in the first phase of Gujarat polls.
The priest Bhaktiprasad Swami has alleged that Congress supporters had a role to play in this attack. He has alleged that the cars in which the attackers were travelling bore Congress flags.
Swami has been admitted to the hospital. His condition is said to be stable.
The priest has been actively campaigning for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat. During this attack, he is said to have been campaigning for local BJP candidate Kirit Patel.
"BJP condemns the attack by Congress on the priest. The Congress knows it is set to lose in the state and hence is doing things like this in disappointment," a BJP leader said.
He was reportedly attacked between Kotda and Navalia near Visavdar in Junagadh district of Gujarat.
The unidentified men fled soon after the attack. Police are probing the incident to find what might be the reason behind the attack.
Voting in Gujarat will be held on December 9 and 14 and counting will be done on December 18.
