NEW DELHI: Ahead of Gujarat polls, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday took a dig at Congress saying that the party is trying to divide Gujaratis on the basis of community. He said that the grand old party did politics on the basis of caste and creed for all these years.

Referring to Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakor and Jignesh Mevani, the Home Minister ironically expressed his sympathy towards the three 'young men' who have made an alliance with Congress for the upcoming assembly elections.

Questioning Congress, Rajnath Singh said, "I want to ask the young men of Congress if GST was 'Gabbar Singh Tax, then why did you support it in the Parliament."

Earlier in the day, Singh applauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts towards developing Gujarat and said that he is the face of the state in independent India.

Rajnath's reaction came a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a huge victory in Uttar Pradesh civic polls. The BJP has given the credit of the victory to PM Modi ahead of Gujarat elections in the state.

Taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi after Congress lost in Amethi, Adityanath said the party which was daydreaming of winning the Gujarat Assembly polls has failed to even open an account in the UP municipal corporation polls.

In his first comments as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged ahead to a decisive victory in the civic polls, Adityanath said the results in favour of the BJP in the civic polls showed that the people had faith in the party and the policies pursued by the central and the state governments.
