Hinduism is a hugely practiced form of religion where we have many dieties and several legends associated with them. The Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh is widely worshipped not just in the country but outside as well.
Lord Shiva followers surely know that the god is adorned with the Trishul, Damaru, Crescent and has holy river Ganga flowing from his hair atop. But have you ever wondered as to why Shiva is always seen with the damaru either in his hand or tied to the trishul?
Today, let's see the various legends associated with it:
Damaru, which looks like a small drum appearing in the form similar to that of an hour-glass is often attributed to the lord's famous dancing posture—the Nataraja. It is believed by many that the damaru produced the first dhwani (sound) also known as 'nada' in the universe. It was born in the void and Shiva danced to the rhythm of damaru, which led to the creation of this universe.
Another legend has it that the top of the damaru symbolizes male creativity of procreation (the Lingam), and the downward representation stands for female creativity of procreation (the Yoni).
Also, many say that the sound produced by beating the dramaru was passed onto lord Ganesha, who added more sound and thus—music was born. Some even suggest that it stands for words of the Vedas.
