Diwali or Deepawali is one of the most important festivals of Hindus. Popular for its theme and tradition, the festival of lights infuses renewed enthusiasm and joy year after year. This time, Diwali falls on October 30.

Since the festival of lights is around the corner, it would be great if parents could teach their little ones, a few lessons that would help them evolve and become better humans.

Here’s taking a look at things parents need to teach their children:

The actual reason behind the celebration

One mustn’t forget the purpose behind the grand celebration. Lord Ram returned to his kingdom Ayodhya after winning a fierce battle against Ravan, the demon king. Ram’s triumph over Ravan marks the victory of the good over the evil. Children must be taught that evil is short-lived and that only truth will make them victorious.

Be environment friendly:

It’s good to participate in joyous celebration. But our moments of ecstasy cannot be agony for Mother Nature. Go for earthen diyas instead of acrylic or harmful metal diyas. Say NO to noisy crackers.

Sharing and caring:

Diwali is all about sharing and caring. We share sweets with neighbours friends and family. Tell children that it is important to share things with the needy too.

Be joyful and hopeful:

Just as the people of Ayodhya knew that their future King and beloved Lord Ram would return to the kingdom after overcoming all odds and challenges, we too must remain joyful and hopeful even during tough times.

To follow in the footsteps of Lord Ram:

Children must be taught about Lord Ram’s life. They must be taught about the sacrifices the lord made for his parents, brothers and loved ones.
