Triple Talaq Bill: Congress suggests names of 17 Rajya Sabha MPs for proposed Select Committee

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday put across the names of 17 Rajya Sabha lawmakers who could be a part of the proposed Select Committee on Triple Talaq. The names include Renuka Chowdhury, K Rahman Khan, Derek O Brien, Javed Ahmad, Majeed Memon, KK Ragesh and D Raja.

Amid massive uproar and protests, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tabled the Triple Talaq bill in the upper house of Parliament earlier today. Immediately after, Congress leader Anand Sharma moved a notice stating that the bill should be referred to a Select Committee of Rajya Sabha and suggested the above-mentioned names.

Accusing the opposition of derailing the bill, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley argued that a house member cannot suddenly move a motion in such manner.

"The house is taken by surprise that a motion is suddenly moved, it has not been submitted a day before. The motion has to be give at least 24 hours in advance," he said.

The Rajya Sabha was later adjourned till Thursday 11 pm, amid pandemonium over the Triple Talaq bill.
