Delhi student Gurmehar Kaur on Time magazine's Gen-Next leaders' list

NEW DELHI: The Time Magazine has included Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur in its list of Next Generation Leaders for 2017.

Gurmehar, who has been hailed as a "free speech warrior" and the only Indian in the list, is the daughter of a martyred army captain.

In February this year, Gurmehar had raised her voice to protest campus violence involving the right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Her social media post, which showed a photo of herself holding a placard reading, "I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone" had gone viral and grabbed the media attention.

Around the same time, another picture from an earlier campaign to promote Indo-Pak peace had surfaced on social media. The image showed Gurmehar holding a placard saying, "Pakistan did not kill my dad, war killed him."

Following which she had received rape and death threats from online trolls. But she refused to be silenced.
