Steve Smith's dream career has come crashing down after Cricket Australia (CA) banned him for 12 months as he was found guilty for his role in the ball-tampering episode that rocked the sport last week. And his father, Peter, got so disturbed with the episode that he decided to dump his son's Australia cricket kit in the garage.

"He'll be fine, he'll survive, he'll survive," Peter said as cameras of Australian channel 'Seven News' followed him while he took the kit out of his car.

Captain Smith conspired with his deputy David Warner and batsman Cameron Bancroft to alter the condition of the ball on the third day of the third Test during Australia's ongoing tour of South Africa.

After being stripped of his captaincy and asked to return home by Cricket Australia, along with Warner and Bancroft, Smith held a press conference where he broke down while saying sorry to the nation.

"To see the way my old man's been...it hurts. I just want to say I'm sorry for the pain that I've brought to Australia and the fans and the public, it's devastating and I'm truly sorry," a teary-eyed Smith said.

"I take full responsibility ... There was a failure of leadership, of my leadership. I'll do everything I can to make up for my mistake and the damage it's caused."

Warner, who also broke down in a press conference, has also been banned by CA for 12 months, while Bancroft has been slapped with a nine-month ban.

In the aftermath of the incident, the BCCI also decided to bar Smith (Rajasthan Royals) and Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad) from playing the Indian Premier League.
