Growing up, Jagmohan Dalmiya was nothing more than an enthusiastic club cricketer. He was a wicketkeeper-batsman and represented Jorabagan and Rajasthan in Kolkata league. Though he once scored a double century, Dalmiya's career never really took off.

Being born in a Marwari family, he had to join his father's construction business at the age of 20. But the cricket-mad Dalmiya's sights were firmly fixed on the BCCI. Dalmiya's association with the board began in 1979. He became its treasurer in 1983 and then went on to become a secretary.

His partnership with Punjab cricket chief Inderjit Singh Bindra propelled him to the top of the board echelons. The duo was instrumental in helping bring the World Cup to Asia in 1987 and then again in 1996.

Having altered rules of game in their favorably maximizing telecast rights for Indian cricket, Dalmiya-Bindra began flexing their muscles internationally. In 1997, Dalmiya was elected as ICC boss, becoming the first Asian to head world cricket's governing body.

Dalmiya was the first administrator to realize the true power of India cricket. India accounted for more than 75% of the TV audience and hence a proportionate chunk of sponsorship money, which shifted the balance of power irreversibly to India's side.

Post his innings at the ICC, Dalmiya retained his stronghold in Indian cricket as he held the position of BCCI president from 2000-2004. His casting vote helped Ranbir Mahendra become president of the board in the September 2004 elections.

His lowest moment in cricket administration perhaps came in the year 2006 when he was expelled from the BCCI for alleged misappropriation of funds. Dalmiya resigned from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) in 2007 on similar charges.

After a long drawn out court saga, Dalmiya returned to the BCCI fold after it revoked his suspension and withdrew all cases against him. The canny cricketer administrator completed his comeback to the top in 2012 after being named interim president. In 2015, Dalmiya was elected president of the BCCI once again.
