Hardik Pandya-led Team India will begin the new year with a three-match T20I series against Dasun Shanaka’s Sri Lanka, beginning with the first game at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday (January 3). It will be a fresh start for Team India, who had mixed success in 2022, especially in the T20 format. Hardik, who lead India to a 1-0 series win over New Zealand in a rain-hit series last year, will look to consolidate his place as the T20 skipper with Rohit Sharma being asked to focus on ODI and Test cricket.

The Gujarat Titans skipper will be leading a young side against the Lankans with Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad set to be the new-look openers for this series. World No. 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav will be back in action in the middle-order alongside his skipper Pandya and Shubman Gill and Deepak Hooda.

It will be interesting to see who will fit into the middle-order between Sanju Samson and Rahul Tripathi, who is yet to make his international debut. With Rishabh Pant sidelined after his accident, India will look at Samson and Ishan Kishan as his possible replacement for some time to come.

In the bowling department, Yuzvendra Chahal will be back in action with Axar Patel as the spinners while Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel are expected to do the pace bowling duties in the series. Check the squads for India vs Sri Lanka series here.

A total has been held at the Wankhede by India. A place where people chase, but Sri Lanka merely miss. Although it came a little later than usual and after Sri Lanka's innings had already started, there was supposed to be dew. The momentum of the innings began when Shanaka strode out to the middle and started to blast a few balls into the crowd. He was joined by Hasaranga, and at that point the visitors appeared to be favourites. However, they lost a few early wickets and were unable to keep up with the asking rate. However, Mavi, who had previously taken the first two wickets, returned and ended the partnership, and Umran quickly followed it up by taking the important wicket of Shanaka a few overs later. Karunaratne continued to fight, but he eventually fell short of the finish line.

Axar accomplished it. By 2 runs, India triumphs. The entire team rushes up to Axar and surrounds him. Under pressure, he maintained his composure and delivered. Karunaratne turns around, defeated. He gave it his all but came up just short. Karunaratne mistimed the heave to deep mid-wicket and thought the game was over instantly. Madushanka was hunting for the second run, but Karunaratne had his back to him. Axar went over the wicket and darted it in; it may have been in the slot, but Karunaratne was unable to get under it. Ishan Kishan receives a toss from Hooda and completes the rest.

Shanaka wanted to drive it over extra cover while full and around off, but the extra pace prevented him from getting the elevation. He cuts the ball to extra cover, and Chahal hangs on to a good catch. Chahal did well to catch the ball close to his body while it was still moving.
