In a major blow to India ahead of the four-match Test series against Australia, young opening batsman Prithvi Shaw was on Friday carried off the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) after suffering a suspected ankle injury during the lone warm-up match against Cricket Australia XI.

The 19-year-old twisted his ankle while attempting to take a catch off Australian opener Max Bryant on the deep midwicket boundary during the third day of the tour match. As he was trying to flick the ball back into play, he landed awkwardly with his left ankle bending 90-degrees inwards., cricket.com.au reported.

Medical staff from both sides immediately rushed to attend Shaw, who visibly appeared to be in a lot of pain. He was subsequently carried off the field by India physiotherapist Patrick Farhart and a support staff member into the dressing room before the match resumed.

Reflecting on Shaw's injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that the young batsman was taken to local hospital for scans.

"The medical team is assessing Prithvi Shaw at the moment. He hurt his left ankle while attempting to take a catch at the boundary ropes. Shaw is being taken to the hospital for scans #TeamIndia," the BCCI tweeted.

On Thursday, Shaw smashed a sublime knock off 66 runs off 69 balls, including 11 boundaries, before he was dismissed by Cricket Australia XI leg-spinner Dan Fallins while attempting a sweep shot.

Shaw was certain to open the batting for India in the opening Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval next week. However, the injury has put his participation in doubt.
