No early setbacks for Australian openers (so far), Renshaw and Khawaja, who continue to opt cautious approach in this early phase of first session at Adelaide.
Debutant Matt Renshaw along with makeshift opener Usman Khawaja, who usually bats at No. 3, started the Australia's proceedings with the bat on Day 1 after South African captain Faf du Plesis declared innings when the visitors were 259/9.
David Warner, who had just returned to the field after receiving treatment for a shoulder complaint, was not eligible to open the innings for the hosts as he was required to spend 6 minutes more on field before it was Australia's turn to open the innings.
On Day 1, it was an exceptional knock of 118 by Du Plesis along with a 40-run innings by opener Steve Cook which guided the Proteas to 259, amid some breathtaking display of bowling by the Aussie seamers who ripped through the visitors batsmen throughout the day.
Mitchell Starc with 2, Josh Hazlewood with 4, Jackson Bird with 2 and Nathan Lyon with 1 were among wickets for the hosts.
All in all, it was a fairly even day's play after South Africa won the toss and opted to bat. The pitch had enough swing to offer for the pacers, who did make the most of the conditions barring Faf's incredible ton.
The tourists, who looked shaken up for most part of the match, recovered later on thanks to their skipper's heroics.
Hazlewood was undoubtedly Australia's star with the ball with a 4-wicket-haul.
Faf, with his bold decision to declare innings while Warner was out, was thinking of picking up a couple of wickets by stumps but couldn't execute his plan then. His side still has the opportunity to execute it in the first session.
