The ambitious 'heritage cities' project draws parallels with the 'smart cities' proposal formulated by the Narendra Modi government which plans to develop 100 smart cities as economic hotspots over the next one decade.

According to sources, Phase-1 of the heritage city proposal will cover Varanasi, Ajmer, Amritsar, Gaya, Mathura, Kanchipuram and Vellankanni while cities like Puri, Tirupati, Allahabad, Ujjain, Hampi, Rishikesh and Lucknow will be covered in Phase-2.

It is learnt that the Prime Minister has also given specific inputs to the urban development ministry to redevelop Varanasi as a heritage city.
