New Delhi: Permanent Account Number (PAN) holds substantial importance since it's not only used in filing tax returns, but also used as an identification document. One can easily apply for PAN card online.
Guidelines:
1.You have to log on to the website of Income Tax PAN Services Unit https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan first of all.
2.On the portal you will find various applications including applying for new card, tracking status and correcting PAN details.
3. If you are applying for new PAN, form 49A needs to be filled online. You can visit https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan2/servlet/NewPanApp and fill in your details here. Once the form is submitted, you receive an confirmation in form of a 15 digit acknowledgement number which can be printed for further use.
4.The 15-digit number has to be sent to the IT department along with mandatory documents.

- Aadhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India
- Elector's photo identity card
- Driving licence
- Passport
- Ration card having photograph of the applican
- Arms license
- Photo identity card issued by the Central Government or State Government or Public Sector Undertaking
- Pensioner card having photograph of the applicant
- Central Government Health Service Scheme Card or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card
- Certificate of identity in original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councillor or a Gazetted officer
- Bank certificate in original on letter head from the branch (along with name and stamp of the issuing officer) containing attested photograph and bank account number of the applicant

- Aadhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India

- Passport of the spouse
- Post office passbook having address of the applicant
- Latest property tax assessment order
- Domicile certificate issued by the government
- Allotment letter of accommodation issued by Central or State Government of not more than three years old

- Certificate of address in original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councillor or a Gazetted officer
- Employer certificate in original
- You can also use one of the following documents, if it is less than three months old:
- Electricity bill
- Landline telephone or broadband connection bill
- Water bill
- Consumer gas connection card or book or piped gas bill
- Bank account statement
- Depository account statement
- Credit card statement

- Birth Certificate
- Pension payment order
- Marriage certificate issued by Registrar of Marriages
- Matriculation certificate

- Domicile certificate issued by the government
- Affidavit sworn before a magistrate stating the date of birth

5. Ensure that your name is in the same format as you filled in the form 49A.
In addition, you are required to pay Rs 96 as fee if the communication address lies within India. In case the address is outside India, you will pay Rs 962.
You can even pay your charges through demand draft, internet banking, and credit/debit card in the earlier case. You will receive payment receipt if charges paid online and you are required to attach it with your acknowledgement letter as payment proof. However, for the latter you can only pay through a demand draft.
Note
The acknowledgement form along with accompanied proofs must be sent to NSDL in Pune within 15 days of the online application date. The envelope must be subscribed with the words APPLICATION FOR PAN – Acknowledgement Number.
Thereafter, you must wait for the payment received, if paid through cheque or demand draft. You must track your application status regularly. You can use tracking facility provided by NSDL by sending an SMS to 57575 or by typing SMS NSDLPAN-space-Acknowledgement No
