Washington: A year after Windows 8.1 was made available to users, the Microsoft's PC operating system has finally gathered steam as the market share for computer systems that run Windows 8.1 rose to 10.9 percent in October as opposed to 6.7 percent in September and 7.1 percent in August.

The company had introduced changes to the original Windows 8 version in August like, a Shutdown button on the Start screen and the ability to run modern apps from the desktop, in order to attract users to the operating software that was not received well earlier when it was launched, reported CNET.

Customers however, have been keener on sticking to their existing version of Windows as Windows 7 recorded the largest share with 53.1 percent followed by Windows XP at 17.2 percent.
