London: American tech giant International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) has unveiled a new mainframe server, in the hope that it would help head off competition from lower cost PC-based servers.
The firm said its zEnterprise EC12 mainframe server had cost over USD 1 billion to develop, producing a machine with processing cores which are 25 percent more powerful than the earlier models, and had better security and data-analytics tools as well.
According to the BBC, IBM is by far the biggest seller of mainframes, as its machines remain popular with big banks and other organisations that use the large computers for their heavy data-processing needs.
Prices for a basic mainframe, which are based around IBM's own silicon chips, start at about 1 million dollars, the report said.
Analysts claimed that the new launch by IBM, which comes at a time when the mainframe market is experiencing a long-term decline, would keep its existing customers happy but might prove unlikely to win new IBM clients, it added.
