Foxconn to close Chennai plant on Tuesday: Employees Union

Chennai: An employees union of Foxconn India on Monday said that they have been told the company is closing its plant near here tomorrow, but it could not confirmed with the management.

Foxconn India suspended operations at its plant from December 24, 2014, hit by suspension of production at Nokia's Sriperumbudur facility, the main customer of the company, from November 1, 2014.

"We were told officially today that the management has decided to close the plant from tomorrow (February 10). This will not stop us from intensifying our protest," Foxconn India Employees Union Honorary President A Sounderrajan, also a sitting MLA, told PTI.

However, the management did not respond to queries in this regard.

While Nokia announced suspension of production from its facility at nearby Sriperumbudur from November 1, 2014, Foxconn, which supplied electronic parts and served Nokia, announced suspension of production from December 24, 2014.

Since the announcement of suspension of production at the facility, situated in the Nokia Special Economic Zone campus, employees have been resorting to agitations.

Sounderrajan said six rounds of tripartite talks had been held, but there was no breakthrough as employees have been insisting the plant be reopened.

"We have been asking them to reopen the plant. But the management has not responded positively. We also staged a hunger strike," he said.

He said the Employees Union would hold another agitation from the plant to Kancheepuram District
Collector's office on February 12.

In a notice to employees, Foxconn had offered Voluntary Retirement Scheme or severance package to 1,306 employees as part of suspending production at the facility.

Company officials were not available for comment.
