Did Google elevate Sundar Pichai to thwart poaching by Twitter?

New Delhi: In a surprise and significant re-organisation, Google co-founder Larry Page this week announced India-born Sundar Pichai as the new CEO of Google under a major restructuring at the technology giant.

However, market seems to be abuzz with stories and rumours of a possible poaching by micro-blogging site Twitter. As per a report in the Times of India, Twitter tried to get Pichai on board as its CEO after Dick Costolo's resignation. This prompted Google to make the sudden re-structuring and elevate Pichai to the CEO's post.

Quoting sources, TOI said that Twitter had three years back tried to get him on board and had “got very close”. But Google stopped him from taking the offer by awarding millions of dollars of company stock.

Meanwhile, Twitter has been on a search for its new CEO ever since Dick Costolo surrendered his post in July this year, handing the reins back to co-founder Jack Dorsey as the interim CEO.

Other high-level departures over the last 18 months include product chief Daniel Graf, COO Ali Rowghani, and CFO Mike Gupta and the recent resignation of Rishi Garg, the Vice President for Corporate Development and Strategy at Twitter.
